preliminary program schedule
8:30 – 9:30 am: Approximately 85 readers will gather and greeted outside the door to the Little Theatre in the Conference Center of the BA. They will receive instruction and a personal number. A copy of the text, which will be bilingual in Arabic and English will be given to all those in attendance. Participants will have registered to read their numbered passage in Ancient Greek, Modern Greek, Arabic, English, or their native language.
9:30 Welcome to the event Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria.
9:45: Welcome by Professor Kathryn Hohlwein, Founder of The Readers of Homer. Introduction of Professor Ahmad Etman of Cairo University.
10:00am – 11:00am: Professor Ahmad Etman Lecture: “ Homer in the Arabic World”
11:00 – 12 noon: Professor Kathryn Hohlwein and Mahmoud Aboudoma Head of Programs, Arts Center (BA), Ph. D. introduce the next phase of the program: entering the Introduction of Sayed El-Dawi of Nubia, singer, storyteller and bard.
11:15-11:55: Recitation of an excerpt from The Ballad of Bani Hilal by Sayed El-Dawi.
Pause. The first five readers take their places on the stage. Drum and ancient Greek music begins.
12:00pm: The Communal Reading of the Iliad Begins with the first 21 lines of the book in Ancient Greek.
1:30pm – 2:30pm: Luncheon in the Center.
2:30 - 5:00pm: Resume reading as before.
5:00pm: Refreshment.
5:30 – 7:00pm Resume reading until the conclusion. |
